Getting to Gainesville

Gainesville is located in North Central Florida and is accessible by air, car, or bus.

1. Air Travel

While Gainesville has its own regional airport, choosing a larger hub nearby can sometimes offer more flexible flight paths or budget-friendly options.

  • Gainesville Regional Airport (GNV)
    • ~15 minutes from the University of Florida
    • Maximum convenience; shortest travel time to campus. Offers rental cars, taxis, and rideshares
  • Jacksonville International Airport (JAX)
    • ~1.5 hours from the University of Florida
    • Great selection of national carriers and rental options
  • Orlando International Airport (MCO)
    • ~1.5 – 2 hours from the University of Florida
    • Largest hub with frequent domestic and international flights
  • Tampa International Airport (TPA)
    • ~2 – 2.5 hours from the University of Florida
    • Straightforward highway connectivity straight up I-75 and excellent rental car logistics

2. Driving Directions

Gainesville is highly connected by major regional highway systems:

  • I-75: The primary north/south interstate corridor connecting Gainesville to major Florida metropolitan hubs
  • US-441 & Archer Road (SR-24): Direct local routes leading straight into the university district

Transportation Around Town

  • Rideshare (Uber & Lyft): Widely available throughout the entire Gainesville area. This is the most seamless way to travel between local hotels, restaurants, and the airport.
  • Regional Transit System (RTS): The city and university operate a comprehensive bus network. Many routes feature frequent loops connecting campus to surrounding residential and commercial districts. You can find bus routes and schedules on the RTS Website.

3. Parking

Campus parking can be competitive. We highly recommend allowing an extra 15–20 minutes before your the first session of the day to park and walk to the venue.

Weather, Packing, & Accessibility

  • What to Pack:
    • This is Florida, but January weater in Gainesville can be very chilly, especially in the mornings and at night! We recommend packing layers, a light jacket or sweater, and comfortable walking shoes for navigating the University of Florida campus. A compact umbrella or rain jacket may also be helpful for occasional winter showers.
    • For conference days, the Reitz Union can be chilly as well, so we recommend bringing a jacket, cardigan, or blazer jacket so stay comfortable.
  • Accessibility Support: We want to ensure a seamless experience for everyone. If you require specific accommodations regarding transportation, lodging, parking, or physical access to any conference programming, please reach out to our planning team ahead of time.
